China is establishing quantum communications networks in several cities. Currently the country is building a 1,000-km quantum communications connecting Beijing and Shanghai, two main cities in the country.
Quantum communications provides a new way to process information, including encoding, storage, transmission and logic operations, as well as the precise manipulation of photons, atoms and other microscopic particles, the People’s Daily reported recently. The technology claims to offer ultra-high security as a quantum photon can neither be separated nor duplicated. It is, therefore, impossible to wiretap, intercept or crack information transmitted through quantum communication.
China wants to take a lead in this technology. The country hopes to launch the first of its kind experimental quantum communications satellite in July.
