A recent Nokia-MBIT study reveals a 50% data traffic growth in India, with 3G growth outpacing 2G networks in all 22 circles in the country.
The study hints that 3G data is growing fast leading to slow growth rate of 2G data at just 12%. With most of the major telcos expanding 3G networks in all the circles, it was to be expected that 3G will record a high growth rate. 3G contributed nearly 71% of total traffic in major metros as of December 2015. Further, the growing adoption of 3G data is driven by 3G device penetration, which more than doubled in 2015.
The study also pointed towards a growing consumption of data. The average monthly data usage for 3G surpassed 750 MB per subscriber. The mobile broadband ecosystem is maturing in the country with the launch and expansion of 4G networks. There is a growing device ecosystem leading to an increasing adoption of multimedia services, which will further boost mobile traffic. Video and social networking now contributes 60% of data traffic.
