According to Myanmar Times, seven foreign companies have expressed interests to become Myanmar’s fourth mobile operator. The companies are said to be Singapore’s Singtel, Hong Kong’s 1Com, China’s Xinwei, Vietnam’s Viettel, China Telecom, South Africa’s MTN and Free from France.
In July 2015, Myanmar invited proposals from domestic public companies to become the fourth telecom operator in the country in partnership with the foreign firm. The move was to meet the swelling demand for mobile services in the country.
The current existing players are Norway’s Telenor, Qatar’s Ooredoo and MPT, a joint venture between the telecoms ministry and Japanese-owned KDDI Group.
