TM Forum’s Open APIs initiative has managed to generate support from some of the world’s biggest service providers. Nine telcos, Bharti Airtel, Axiata, BT, China Mobile, China Unicom, NTT, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone Group have adopted a suite of digital service management APIs put together by TM Forum. This is seen as an important step for developing an ecosystem that will enable service providers to deploy best practices learned from big internet firms.
As the world increasingly moves towards a web scale ecosystem, cooperation between the service providers is crucial to build interoperable systems and solutions, which would simplify user interface and accessibility.
Open APIs will lead to improvement in business and IT agility, bring down cost and complexity of operations and create a global platform for telcos to innovate upon. As the industry moves towards an era of connected devices, it is essential to have interoperable systems, which would help innovation in a number of key areas such as Internet of Things, smart cities, mobile banking and so on.
